As mamas, we are often filling many roles throughout our days. Whether that be boo-boo fixer, chef, maid, or just mom. Some days I’m a mom, chauffeur, me, a student, a writer, a blogger and so much more. Other days I’m just me and just mom. It’s difficult to switch between all of my roles seamlessly. That is until I started to set myself a stay-at-home mom schedule. My stay-at-home mom schedule saved my sanity by a longshot.

I’ve always been a planner girl, filling my home with calendars and clocks beyond belief. But it is so easy to get lost in the freedoms of being a stay-at-home mom. I became a full-time stay-at-home mom the summer of 2016, and let me tell you, I got next to nothing done. Everyday. I didn’t have a plan for each day. I just kind of rolled with it. Only getting up when the kids got up, staying up late.
Who Wouldn’t Want to Live Life Unscheduled?
This is not a good way to live your life. While it’s fun and enjoyable for a short time, it added so much stress to my life. Things would come up that I’d forgotten about. The kids had no structure to their days. It was a complete mess.
But those days are no more. I often work my days with a tentative schedule because it does leave me with some freedom for
lounging around making changes.
Without some sort of schedule though, there are a lot of things that often get left undone. And it becomes frustrating when housework starts to pile up, things get misplaced. Then you wake up one day and wonder how your house got so messy. And while you’re standing there wondering which room to tackle first, you question how much fun is it really to have so much freedom.
Managing the Different Stay-At-Home Mom Roles
Every mom has multiple roles they fill each and every day. We play taxi, we do all of the shopping, cleaning, cooking, etc. I, for one, am also a college student. These roles can make it seem impossible to live a structured life with free time for our own hobbies. But that isn’t actually true. Once you develop your very own stay-at-home mom schedule, things start to smooth out and you realize that you have been wasting time. I find it much easier to throw in last minute plans or an outing for the family because I know that I have a lot of things planned out.
This doesn’t just go for your time though. To really get the most benefit out of having a stay-at-home mom schedule, you’ve also got to throw in some good budgeting. This way you can have the financial freedom for an extra outing.
Time Saving Tips for Your Stay-at-Home Mom Schedule
You would think that being a stay-at-home mom would free up a lot of time for us. But unfortunately, I’ve only felt like I had less and less time over the past year. As my kids get older and want to do new activities, I realize that being a stay-at-home mom doesn’t mean that I have all the time in the world to do everything.
I was able to find a few time-saving tips that have saved me some time each day/week though. Here are a few of those time savers that I use for my stay-at-home mom schedule:
Order groceries using Walmart pickup
I could easily drop my littlest little at Pre-K and use the 2 hours he’s in school to grocery shop. But come on, who wants to use that precious quiet time for grocery shopping? I can shop online with Walmart Pickup, drop the little off, and then head to pick my order up! This can easily save an hour a week!
Sometimes more. I’d have to say that Walmart Pickup for groceries is the best thing ever. I can’t believe they didn’t try this sooner.
Utilize Amazon Pantry for Household Essentials
I am just going to say this, I freaking love Amazon. I have found the coolest stuff on Amazon, but my absolute favorite things about Amazon is their Prime Pantry, Subscribe & Save, and Textbook Rentals.
You can even use coupons with Amazon Prime Pantry, which is awesome for you coupon-mamas. Subscribe and Save saves you even more money because the more you add to your subscription, the more your savings! You can get up to an additional 15% off on your items. That doesn’t rule out the occasional coupon on some items.
Really though, Amazon is awesome and I can see it outrunning Walmart & Target one day.
(Not to say that I don’t love Walmart or Target, but I don’t have to leave the house to get some of the really neat stuff from Amazon.)
Enlist the Help of Others in Your House
No mama should have to do all of the housework alone. Now it’s one thing if you enjoy doing it, but you should still have your children help out. Giving those babies chores will help them learn responsibility for the future.
I was a, “My kid won’t do chores,” parent too. But I’ve ditched that way of thinking. My stay-at-home mom schedule relies on the kids having a couple of set chores for each day.
Keep Your Home Organized
There nothing more time-sucking than having to run around your house looking for the things you need. Keeping things in certain places will prevent the morning scramble for the kids’ book bags and shoes.
We have a shelf by our front door that holds the shoes and I have hooks set up in my boys’ bedroom where they hang their sweatshirts, jackets, and book bags. This way, each day we know where these things are. They even have a water bottle that is only used for school.
My Stay-At-Home Mom Schedule
7:30 – 8:15 AM
The dreaded alarm goes off now. I hate this time. I’m not one of those people who can hit snooze and then get out of bed. If I don’t get up with my first alarm, I don’t get up. Period. It’s like my brain ignores every other attempt the alarm makes to wake me.
I get up to make sure my biggest little is up and getting ready for school. He’s entered 3rd grade this year, but he’s so self-sufficient it’s incredible. I spend a half an hour walking around the house, making coffee, etc just to be sure I stay awake. I let the dog out (otherwise he’d bark at all of the kids waiting for the bus).
8:15 – 8:45 AM
The biggest little gets on the bus and he’s off to school for the day. After watching him get on the bus I head in the house. Time to do some tidying. I find that if I tidy up every morning, I never spend more than an hour on cleaning. This includes sweeping, vacuuming, etc.
Feed the pets. Can’t forget the furry babies.
8:45 – 9:00 AM
The littlest little gets up. So I feed him something for breakfast. I’m not a breakfast cooking mama either and I’ll be honest about it. He usually ends up having cereal or oatmeal. Something fast that doesn’t require much brain power.
9:30 – 11:00 AM
Let the dog out once again. But I give him a little more time to run around and enjoy the fresh air.
I try to delegate this time each morning for studying. As you know, I’m a mama in college so I have to fit this in every chance I can. I’m not a morning person, but I find I get much more done if I do my homework in the morning.
11:00 – 11:30 AM
Around this time I try to have my youngest eat something for lunch. It’s usually something really small and light because he had breakfast a short time ago. He also gets a snack at Pre-K so I don’t want him to eat too much for lunch.
If there’s more cleaning to be done, I like to work on it while he’s eating his lunch.
11:30 – 11:45 AM
This is the tricky part of the morning. He loves to go to school, but he hates getting dressed. He’ll try anything he can come up with to get out of ditching his pj’s for the day. Sometimes this takes us closer to a half-hour.
Once he is dressed though, is super motivated to leave for school.
11:45 AM – 12:00 PM
Once I have convinced him that getting dressed isn’t a punishment, it’s time to make sure he has his snack and his water bottle for school.
There’s also a little back and forth about why he can’t bring a whole bunch of toys to school with him. And a little silliness about his stuffed animals crying if he leaves them behind.
But once all of that is out of the way we’re able to slip his shoes on and get ready to go. Pre-K drop off is 12:15 pm so I usually try to rush through this part of the morning.
12:00 – 12:40 PM
Dropping the littlest off at Pre-K.
12:40 – 1:00 PM
Once a week I will use this time to pick up the necessities for the week. A little bit of shopping then I’m heading home.
Let the pup out to do his duties of course, maybe a little playing too. He’s a roll in the dirt kinda dog.
A little more cleaning. Because, well, if I keep it clean it takes a lot less time. Most of this is cleaning up leftover lunch dishes.
1:00 – 2:20 PM
Now is when I get to utilize that much needed quiet time.
Because I’m a blogger mama, I use this time to work on my blog. If I have any leftover studying, I do that too.
Throw in 20 minutes or so of self-care because all mamas need to practice self-care.
2:20 – 3:10 PM
Time to pick up my littlest from Pre-K. I love this time because he has always had a great day, but he has no problem telling me about everything he did that day.
3:10 – 3:30 PM
I try to spend this time with my youngest. Since I had finished my cleaning and such during the day, I don’t have any to-do’s weighing on my mind.
Occasionally we will spend this time doing any extra shopping that may need to be done. Although I try to finish this when he is at school.
We take the dog outside to play for a bit (when the weather is nice), maybe draw some pictures. Ya know. Preschooler fun stuff.
3:30 – 4:00 PM
It’s time to prep dinner! Even if I had forgotten to pull something out for dinner, I still have enough time now to scramble something together.
It’s much more freeing knowing that I’ve had a pretty productive day and still have time for other things.
4:00 – 4:45 PM
My oldest gets home around 4:00 PM.
Feed the pets.
Once he gets home we have dinner as a family. This is one thing I try to never let slip. Spending time with the family for dinner is very important to me. It gives us a chance to catch up with each other and talk about anything that we have to do that day.
4:45 – 5:30 PM (Monday, Tuesday, Friday)
As I mentioned before, kids need structure. So I never forget to include my kids’ activities and homework into my stay-at-home mom schedule.
This would be the time that my oldest works on his homework. He’s learning division this year so it is often a very parent-involved task. But on days when he doesn’t need my help, I use this time to get more of my own homework done.
Sometimes homework time and dinner time get swapped. If we had a late lunch that day, I’ll switch these two tasks out and it is easy to do.
4:45 – 9:30 PM (Wednesday & Thursday)
I take four classes for my college coursework, but luckily I have been able to only take two classes on campus. And each is only one day a week. This makes my night school schedule much easier for the kids to handle.
One these nights, the kids go off to the sitter while I’m in school. I hate doing this to them, but sometimes as parents, we have to make difficult decisions.
On Wednesday & Thursday, my kids end up having a late bedtime. But they have gotten used to this after having dealt with it for two previous semesters.
5:30 – 7:30 PM
This is the kids’ free time. Which I definitely take advantage of. I use this time for my own hobbies, blogging, or coursework. It depends on what I have to do really. And that can differ from week to week.
7:30 – 8:00 PM
I use this time to get the kids ready for bed. They take their showers and get their clothes out for the next day.
We always make sure the book bags are packed and ready for the morning. This is a big time-saver in the morning. Even if I wake up late, I know that we have everything ready to go.
8:00 PM +
This time is spent solely on my blog. If you’re not a blogger, you may not understand, but I spend a ton of time making sure my blog has quality content for my readers and that I am providing real value. I would never give you information or advice that I would not adhere to myself.
